You’ve made the decision to buy a new bed. Are you buying the bed alone or with a mattress? What bed size should you go for? These are all important questions and can determine how much rest you ultimately get from your bed. Choosing your bed size is a matter of preference, though it can be limited/determined by the amount of space available in the bedroom. This applies in small bedrooms that may not have the capacity to hold large Californian King beds. Like many countries, we use standardization sizes to determine the sizes of beds sold in the country. This harmonization makes it easy to ensure that mattress manufacturers produce mattresses in corresponding sizes to the beds. Else, mismatches between bed sizes and mattresses would be the order of the day, causing untold frustration among residents.
There are nine major bed sizes. In order of size from smallest to largest, they are Single beds, Long Single beds, King Single beds, Double beds, Long Double beds, Queen beds, King beds, Super King beds, and Californian King beds. Single beds are ideal for older children, teens and petite adults. As the kids grow taller though, they quickly graduate to double and queen beds, so always pay attention to see if the single beds they’ve been using are becoming uncomfortable for them and get them bigger beds. Remember they may not be in a position to alert you of the same. For sharing partners, queen and king bed variations are the best sizes. If they prefer a lot of personal sleeping space even when sharing, king is the best option, while queen is okay for those who enjoy sleeping in close proximity.
Buying a bed is a worthwhile investment, one that will serve you for many years. This means you can’t afford to make assumptions when picking a bed or choose the wrong size, unless you don’t mind buying a replacement shortly thereafter. Considering the long term nature of beds, buy the best quality that you can afford, in a size you feel most comfortable sleeping in. Sometimes, the size of your bedroom can be limiting such as when you desire to buy a king bed but your room is too small to fit one in. In this case, choose a smaller bed size. As long as the mattress is of a good quality, the comfort it gives will mask the space limitation. Then you can upgrade to a bigger bed when you change houses. Younger members of the family can use the smaller bed you’re replacing or you can give it away or sell it on one of the used furniture platforms.
Knowing the standard bed sizes will help you pick the right size of mattress for the bed you intend to buy or for an existing bed without dragging the bed to the store. Sizes range from the narrow and short to the extra wide and long.
